Fagus sylvatica Asplenifolia

Fern-Leaved Beech

A magnificent and elegant specimen tree, Fagus sylvatica Asplenifolia is a deciduous tree celebrated for its remarkably delicate, deeply lobed foliage. It has a pyramidal habit when young, gradually developing a broad, open crown as it matures. The leaves are narrow and fern-like, emerging a soft, bright green in spring before maturing to a lush dark green in summer. The bark is smooth and silvery-grey, a good contrast to the deep green foliage, and beautiful in winter too. In autumn, the canopy transforms into a spectacular display of rich golden-brown and copper tones. This variety maintains the stately, spreading habit of the common beech but with a much lighter, airier texture due to its fine-cut leaves. It is an ideal choice for larger gardens or parklands where its architectural beauty and "shaggy" silhouette can be fully appreciated. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
