Eranthis Cilicica - Winter Aconite

Cilician Winter Aconite

A radiant sign of early Spring, Eranthis Cilicica - Cilician Winter Aconite is a charming tuberous perennial that blankets the garden floor just as the Winter chill begins to lift. Often emerging slightly later than its cousin E. hyemalis, this variety is prized for its more deeply divided, bronze-tinted foliage and slightly larger, honey-scented blooms. It thrives when naturalised under the canopy of deciduous shrubs or tucked into rock gardens, where it creates a luminous golden carpet. The deep yellow, chalice-like flowers are framed by a delicate, finely-fringed collar of leaves that emerges with a distinct mahogany hue before turning green. This species is particularly noted for its resilience in drier, sunnier conditions compared to other aconites. While it shares the "winter aconite" moniker, it is a member of the Ranunculaceae family and lacks the high-level toxicity of true aconites (Aconitum). For the best results, plant tubers in Autumn or divide established clumps immediately after flowering to ensure they never fully desiccate during their summer dormancy.
