Coral Plant

An unusual, evergreen woody climber native to the moist woodlands of Chile. It is believed to be confined to the forests behind the port of Coronel in Arauco province, where it may now be extinct. This plant was introduced to the UK by Richard Pearce in 1862. Berberidopsis corallina produces clusters of deep-crimson, pendant-like flowers, nearly 2 cm across in summer, it requires the protection of a wall and careful placement. It prefers deep, moist, fertile, acidic soil and thrives best in locations shielded from drying winds and direct sunlight. It does not tolerate chalky soils.
