Athyrium otophorum Okanum

Eared Lady Fern

Originally from Japan, Athyrium otophorum var. okanum is a tall, deciduous, clump-forming fern, with broad, arching, finely divided leaves. The foliage opens pale golden-green and turns light green, with purplish-crimson mid-ribs and stems. A wonderful plant for making a patch of brilliance in of a shady border with humus-rich soil, or a woodland planting. The eared lady fern is also good in a pot, as it is does not spread. Slightly less hardy than the native lady fern; protect the crown over winter with the frond when cutting back. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
