A true cider‑apple classic, Tremlett’s Bitter is of English origin (Devon, circa 1880) and prized for its flavourful juice. The fruit are medium‑sized, conical in shape, with skin almost dark red and broken darker striping; they have a smooth, waxy feel.
The tree is moderately vigorous and semi‑spreading, bears on spurs, and becomes productive when 3 - 4 years old, though it has a tendency towards alternate (biennial) heavy crops.
Interestingly, the fruit tends to drop as soon as it is ripe, so timely picking is important or put out nets to catch the crop.
For storage: the apples should be used within three weeks of harvest, though they mature in flavour after standing for two weeks post‑harvest.
