Apple Sheep's Snout

Apple Sheep’s Snout

A venerable traditional Irish heritage variety prized for its resilience in damp maritime climates, Apple Sheep’s Snout (also known historically in Ireland as 'Snouty') takes its charming name from the distinctively ribbed, conical shape of its fruit. In mid-Spring, the tree produces a profusion of delicate pink-blushed blossom that withstands inclement weather and sets a reliable, heavy crop. By October, the branches bear large, angular apples with pale greenish-yellow skins flushed with warm crimson stripes. While crisp and sharp enough to enjoy straight from the tree when fully ripe, it comes into its own in the kitchen, cooking down into a wonderfully light, briskly flavoured golden purée with minimal sugar needed. Having evolved over generations in western conditions, it possesses natural hardiness and remarkable resistance to scab and canker, making it an indispensable choice for organic and high-rainfall gardens.
