Apple Frederick
A vintage-quality Welsh cider apple discovered in the Forest of Dean during the 19th century, apple 'Frederick' is highly regarded as one of the best "full sharp" varieties. The tree is moderately vigorous with a distinctive, attractive drooping habit. While it can be slightly slow to start cropping and has a tendency toward biennial bearing (fruiting heavily every second year), it is a reliable choice for the traditional orchard or large garden. It is a spur-bearer, making it versatile enough to be trained as a cordon or espalier.
The fruit is small to medium-sized and strikingly colorful, featuring a yellow-green base almost entirely covered in a dark red-purple striped flush. Its white flesh is sometimes stained pink just beneath the skin. Primarily used for cider, it produces a juice of exceptional quality—vibrant, aromatic, and sharp with no bitterness or astringency. Beyond the cider press, its high acid content makes it a superb choice for a sharp cooking apple or for creating a "finest" pink-tinted apple jelly.
