From mid to late Winter, the bare branches become densely clad in clusters of spidery flowers featuring long, twisted petals in a striking shade of ruby-red to crimson-copper. The blooms carry a light, spicy-sweet fragrance that wafts through crisp winter air. In Spring, broad, hazel-like green leaves emerge, which undergo a second dramatic transformation in Autumn, turning brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and fiery red before dropping to reveal the winter buds.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter; dislikes chalk, heavy clay, and shallow soils
Position: Flowers best in full sun
Season of interest: Autumn and Winter
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 8-12’ (2.5-3.5m) Spread: 8-12’ (2.5-3.5m)

Image 1 by Meneerke bloem cropped and licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
