A very old heirloom apple from central Europe, Apple Glockenapfel is primarily a cooking apple, and the favourite variety for making apple strudel. The tree is moderately vigorous, with an upright, spreading habit, and a spur-bearer. Heavy crops of red-streaked green fruit, medium-sized to large and broad at the base, giving an almost bell-like shape; the flesh is pale yellowish-white, crisp and moderately juicy, with a good balance of acid and sweetness. Excellent cooked, when slices retain some shape, but also good eaten fresh when fully ripe. Very good keeper – will keep for 6 months in suitable conditions. Scab-resistant.
