Acer sieboldianum

Siebold's Maple

Native to Japan, Acer sieboldianum is a small to medium-sized, slow-growing, deciduous tree, with a narrow, upright crown when young, which gradually broadens to give a round, imposing crown. Corymbs of pale yellow flowers appear in late spring, followed in early autumn by paired winged seeds (samaras) whose wings form a wide angle. In spring, the green leaves with 9-11 lobes are covered with a pale down, some down remaining on the undersides all summer. In autumn the leaves turn bright orange and red, developing the best colour in full sun or very light shade. Siebold’s Maple can be grown in a container, which will keep it small, and as a multi-stemmed shrub. Easy to grow, requiring little pruning – a good choice for the small garden.
