The leaves are finely dissected into narrow, lace-like lobes. They emerge in Spring with a warm coppery-bronze tint before rapidly maturing into a brilliant, glowing lemon-yellow. Compared to older golden elderberry varieties, 'Sutherland Gold' has good scorch resistance, holding its bright colour well into summer without bleaching or burning, as long as it is given some shade from intense afternoon sun. In mid to late Spring, small, cone-shaped clusters of creamy-yellow flowers appear alongside the emerging leaves, which eventually develop into small, glossy red berries by late Summer that are highly favored by wild birds. This tough, cold-hardy shrub adapts smoothly to Irish growing conditions.
