Slower-growing, smaller and more ornamental than the species, Prunus laurocerasus Etna is a reliable choice for hedging in the smaller garden, as it can be kept to a reasonable height if clipped twice a year. If unclipped, it can reach 4m, a large, evergreen shrub with a tall, very dense habit which makes it ideal where a very protective, wind-resistant hedge is needed. New leaves emerge bronze-orange, contrasting well with the older, dark green leaves; twice yearly clipping means two seasons of colour. In spring, spikes of small, scented white flowers appear; these are followed in autumn by shiny black berries. Be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic, including the drip from the leaves, which will prevent any other plants growing beneath.
