From mid-Winter through to early Spring, the bare branches become densely smothered in large, highly perfumed flowers featuring long, wavy petals in a striking burnt-orange to copper-red hue. The blooms release a powerful, sweet spice scent that easily wafts across winter gardens. In Spring, broad, hazel-like green foliage emerges, which transforms in Autumn into a brilliant display of vivid yellow, orange, and deep red before dropping.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter; dislikes chalk, heavy clay, and shallow soils
Position: Flowers best in full sun
Season of interest: Autumn and Winter
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 8-12’ (2.5-3.5m) Spread: 8-12’ (2.5-3.5m)

Image 1 by Dominicus Johannes Bergsma cropped and licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
