The berries can be cooked to make jams and pies, or can be juiced. They can even be eaten raw, although fairly sharp and astringent. Aronia melanocarpa Hugin is a compact variety of Chokeberry, growing between 1-5m. It can be grown as an individual shrub, or as a hedge around the vegetable garden, although yields are better as individuals. Black chokeberry Hugin will tolerate acidic soils and damper, boggy ground, but will not thrive in waterlogged soils. Being self-fertile, Aronia melanocarpa Hugin is an easy to grow, fruiting shrub. Whether it is grown for the edible berries, the autumn colour, or for the wildlife benefits (the blossoms are adored by pollinators), this shrub is sure to be a delight in anyone’s garden.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Position: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils, but will easily tolerate wet clay or poor sandy conditions.
Seasons of interest: Spring flowers; late summer fruit, Autumn colour
Hardiness: Hardy
Height: 3-5ft (1-1.5m) Spread: 3-5ft (1–1.5m)
