Ehretia dicksonii

Ehretia dicksonii

A rare and most unusual large shrub or medium-sized tree, Ehretia dicksonii is a medium-sized to tall, deciduous tree which can cope with very alkaline soil. The corky bark is grey and heavily ridged, and the branches grow at strange angles and intertwine. The large, pointed, leathery leaves, 8”/20cm long, are dark green, very rough on the upper surface and felted beneath. Panicles of creamy-white, not altogether pleasantly scented flowers are borne in May, clear of the leaves, followed by yellow or greenish-yellow berries. Needs a soil which is not too fertile, and full sun to ripen the new wood, which can otherwise be damaged by frost; the tree is however, perfectly hardy.
