The large, green leaves, divided into 5-7 oblong leaflets, and with a citrus scent when crushed, appear quite late in spring, and do not fall until November. The flowers appear at the same time as the leaves; the male catkins are about 4”/10cm long and the female flowers much smaller, and wind-pollinated. Velvety green, round fruits appear in June, within which form the nutritious nuts, high in protein, omega 3 oil and antioxidants. Be aware that the common walnut casts a heavy shade and also produces a substance that inhibits the growth of many other plants. Not a reliable nut producer in Ireland, but a beautiful tree.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Autumn in particular
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: up to 115’ (35m) Spread: 60’ (18m)
Pollination: Self-fertile, but fruits better with another walnut
Uses: Nuts can be eaten fresh or salted; in late June, before the shells have set, the fruits can be pickled

["Bareroot","Common broadleaf trees
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":"N/A","option3":"N/A
Juglans regia - The shape is broad and rounded, making for a good specimen tree. The flowers open white, sometimes flushed pink, from bright pink buds, appearing for a very long period in April and May. Heavy crops of small, honey-yellow fruit can be used for making a golden apple jelly or left to hang on the tree into winter, until they soften enough for the birds eat from the tree. The tree is self-fertile, and is an excellent pollinator for apple trees in Flowering Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6. Can be susceptible to scab, so not advised for wetter areas. As a tree it grows into a large spreading tree, with a beautiful rounded canopy, bearing golfball-sized fruit with bright green husks, which decay to reveal the shell, which contains within, the edible 'meat'. Good choice for larger gardens, equally good in an Agro-forestry plantation. Black walnut is also allelopathic, which means that it releases chemicals from roots and other tissues that give the tree a competitive advantage. It’s a medium-sized to tall, deciduous tree of medium growth-rate with a very upright, almost columnar habit when young, spreading somewhat as it matures. The elliptical leaves are mid-green. The large, cup-shaped flowers, whose splayed petals display shades from carmine to rose-pink to shell-pink, emerge on the bare branches, and are strongly scented, with a rather fruity fragrance. It’s an easy, adaptable magnolia; if any pruning is needed, it should be done in midsummer. Magnolia Daybreak holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is an excellent choice as a specimen, drawing all eyes when in flower.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Well drained, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: Spring in particular
Hardiness: Hardy
Height: up to 33’ (10m) Spread: 10’ (3m)

["Garden trees","ornamental","ornamental trees
"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":"N/A","option3":null
Magnolia Daybreak - The shiny, fresh green leaves are elliptical in shape, and turn copper-bronze in autumn. Beautifully scented, soft pink, goblet-shaped flowers, with a deeper pink flush on the outside of the eight petals, are borne in March-April from rose-pink buds, with a few flowers appearing in July. Tolerates urban pollution, and requires minimal pruning and care, although a mulch is recommended to prevent the shallow roots from drying out.
