Leycesteria formosa Golden Lanterns

Golden Pheasant bush

A more compact cultivar of the species, Leycesteria formosa Golden Lanterns is vigorous, medium-sized, deciduous shrub with an upright, bushy habit, grown for its lovely primrose-yellow foliage and long season of interest. The heart-shaped leaves emerge yellow, and fade to a delicate primrose colour – grow in partial shade to prevent scorching of the leaves. In July, August and September, the plant bears 4 inch-long tassels of white flowers with showy, wine-coloured bracts; these are followed by very deep purple berries. Be aware that the plant can become invasive, as birds can spread seed from the berries into walls, paths and other plantings. Also known as Himalayan honeysuckle, pheasant bush Golden Lanterns attracts pollinators, birds and other wild-life, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
