Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer

Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer

A more compact mophead hydrangea, Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub with a broad rounded shape, ideal for the smaller garden. Large, loose, deep rose-pink or purplish blooms appear in early to mid-summer; hydrangea Leuchtfeuer tends towards pink flowers, but flowers will appear more purple on acid soils. The leaves are good, deep green and glossy, and turn to shades of red and yellow in autumn before falling; the leaves come in early in the year. The flowers are good for cutting and drying; leave the flower heads on the plant over winter to protect the flower-buds from frost, and dead-head in February.
