Viola odorata - Sweet Violet

Sweet Violet

A beautifully scented native wildflower for a posy with snowdrops very early in the year, Viola odorata is a mat-forming evergreen perennial, spreading by means of stolons (like strawberries) which root as they go. Deep green, heart-shaped leaves form a ground-covering mat. From February to March, the familiar, heavily scented, violet (sometimes white) flowers nod among the leaves; the flowers are edible, so use in early salads or pick them to make candied violets for cakes and puddings through the year. A perfect plant for naturalising in a woodland garden, or underplanting shade-tolerant roses or shrubs as ground-cover. Dead-head to prolong flowering.
