Bareroot – Future Forests

Bareroot

Bareroot plants are often a smarter choice than potted plants, both for their (generally) lower prices and for their ability to adapt well to a new site. Bareroot season is only from November to March, while the plants are in their dormant phase and can be safely transported.

Important

This collection gathers all of the plants that have bareroot as an available option. We currently do not have the ability to filter out products whose bareroot options are out of stock/season. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Bareroot plants | November to March

Our bareroot plants are sold only from November to March, but this can vary by species and type. Generally, these are the season for bareroot plants:

Like it or loath it, the first specimens were introduced approximately 900 years ago, and since then it has taken over woodlands, hedgerows, railway lines, cliff sides, and everything from the smallest urban garden to the largest of arboretums. It's feared for its persistence in seeding practically everywhere- however, its usefulness is rarely spoken about. During its lifetime of approx. 200 years, it provides for hundreds of different species, including humans. Its sweet sap can be extracted from the bark to be used as an alternative to maple syrup; in Spring it blooms with thousands of nectar-filled flowers which bees absolutely adore. In Summer, you can find hundreds of birds nesting and raising their young in it, as well as many species of lichen and moss, and a variety of insects, on the bark.
In Autumn, Sycamore will leave as much as 2 ft of leaf litter on the ground and you will find squirrels, mice, hedgehogs, and many other species feeding on the seeds which will have fallen over the previous few weeks, and even nesting among the leaves at the base of the tree. In old age, the tree provides host to many many different fungi, insects and even a few mammals nesting in its hollow stem. Small clusters of red flowers on the bare branches in spring turn to red ‘keys’ in autumn; the young twigs are also intensely red. Needs acid soil to thrive and colour well. A vigorous tree with a particularly handsome, conical habit and beautiful structure, it makes an excellent and colourful specimen tree. Almond Robijn is self-fertile and fast-growing. Some resistance to peach leaf-curl. Needs fertile soil, shelter and full sun. Prune as little as possible, and only in midsummer. Apple Camelot is a fairly vigorous tree, very healthy, with particularly good scab resistance, so particularly suitable for organic growing. Partial tip-bearer, so can’t be used for trained forms. Attractive pink blossom. Good, slightly sharp flavour and very firm skin – good for packed lunches and liked by children. The tree is shapely, even with limited pruning, and fairly vigorous. Very reliable, heavy cropper. Spur-bearer; produces spurs readily, even without pruning. The blossom is particularly attractive and long-lasting, making it an excellent pollinator, and is tolerant of late frosts, so good for colder areas. Keeps only for a week or so; use any you can’t eat for juicing or cooking. Resistant to most diseases, particularly canker, and produces well even in poor weather. Does best on rich soil. A very easy and reliable apple, ideal for inexperienced growers, and a most attractive specimen tree for gardens.

Site: Average exposure
Soil: Any reasonably well-drained soil; rich clay preferred
Position: Full sun
Pick: Early September
Keep: only for a couple of weeks
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Group 3 (pollinates with Groups 2, 3 and 4)
Uses: Eating apple; also for juice and cooking

Learn more about fruit tree rootstocks

During the bareroot season, our apples are pre pruned before being dispatched by mail order.

["Apple Trees
"option1":"Bareroot","option2":"M27","option3":"1yr
Apple Katy - The blossom is particularly attractive and long-lasting, making it an excellent pollinator, and is tolerant of late frosts, so good for colder areas.

"}
