It was named for the size of the nuts, although these are a bit smaller than those of some modern varieties. Very vigorous and exceptionally reliable, bearing heavy crops of large, rather pointed, glossy brown nuts with an excellent flavour, whether eaten fresh or from store. Highly nutritious source of high-quality protein, ‘good fats’, fibre, Vitamin B, folate, iron and other minerals. Harvest as they start falling from the tree. Eat fresh, or dry the crop carefully, then remove the husks and store in a mouse-proof place. Filbert ‘Hall’s Giant’ was the best performer in trials by the Agroforestry Research Trust in Devon. A good choice where weather conditions are poor, and an excellent pollinator of other later-flowering hazels. The nuts have a particularly fine flavour, and the dangling yellow male catkins are a lovely sight in late winter. It’s compact for a hazel, with a bushy habit, rather slow growing and not the heaviest cropper. It’s partially self-fertile, but will crop better if grown with a different hazel cultivar, unless wild hazel is growing close by. For the best nuts, prune it to form an open goblet-shaped bush on a single stem, and remove any suckers. If squirrels are a problem, pick the nuts at once; dry them indoors on trays in a warm place for three weeks. Cordyline australis produces a dense mass of long, spiky sword-like leaves on stout branches. On mature plants, large clusters of small, creamy-white flowers are produced in early Summer.

Paulownia tomentosa - Foxglove Tree

Grown for its enormous leaves and masses of lavender flowers in summer, Paulownia tomentosa is a medium-sized, very fast-growing, deciduous tree with a broad, spreading habit and rather thick branches. Striking, green, oval leaves up to 8”/25cm long leaves are normally produced, but if the tree is cut back to the ground each year, the leaves become enormous. In summer, sprays of lavender-coloured, foxglove-like flowers cover the tree, but, as it flowers on wood produced the previous year, you will not get flowers if the plant is cut back to improve leaf-size. The foxglove tree holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any well drained soil, preferably moist
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Summer in particular
Hardiness: Fully hardy but frost can brown emerging leaves
Height: 40’ (12m) Spread: 26’ (8m)

["Bareroot","Garden trees
"option1":"Bareroot | 2-3ft","option2":"N/A","option3":"N/A
Paulownia tomentosa - The large, green leaves, divided into 5-7 oblong leaflets, and with a citrus scent when crushed, appear quite late in spring, and do not fall until November. The flowers appear at the same time as the leaves; the male catkins are about 4”/10cm long and the female flowers much smaller, and wind-pollinated. Velvety green, round fruits appear in June, within which form the nutritious nuts, high in protein, omega 3 oil and antioxidants. Be aware that the common walnut casts a heavy shade and also produces a substance that inhibits the growth of many other plants. Not a reliable nut producer in Ireland, but a beautiful tree.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Autumn in particular
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: up to 115’ (35m) Spread: 60’ (18m)
Pollination: Self-fertile, but fruits better with another walnut
Uses: Nuts can be eaten fresh or salted; in late June, before the shells have set, the fruits can be pickled

["Bareroot","Common broadleaf trees
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":"N/A","option3":"N/A
Juglans regia -
