Best known for its incredible coastal resilience and salt tolerance; though it prefers drier soils it does fairly well on damp soils. It is quite an important wildlife tree as it tends to form a hollow trunk at a relatively young age and plays host to many different Fungi. Fantastic specimens of Quercus ilex can be seen at Fota Arboretum in East Cork and St. Annes Park, Raheny, Dublin 5.

Grown as a Hedge

Another good option, though rarely utilized is growing Holm Oak as a tough sturdy formal seaside hedge. Its grey holly-like evergreen leaves can also be clipped and trained into topiary. It’s ideal for the smaller garden, and can also be grown in large pots, if kept well-watered – lovely along a terrace or in a more formal garden. It’s a medium-sized, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with an upright, rounded habit. The slightly toothed, elliptical, pointed leaves are mid-green and the flowering stems are sturdy, well able to support the masses of cone-shaped flower-panicles, 4”/10cm across, which are borne for a long period in late summer and autumn. These emerge soft lime-green, gradually fading to white and then blush-pink, often freckled with raspberry-pink; they are good for pollinators, and when dried, they make lovely winter flower-arrangements. Lilac-pink goblet-shaped flowers 4”/10cm across appear in mid-spring on the bare branches, the dozen or so tepals opening flat to a star-like shape revealing the paler interior. The leaves are narrowly oval, mid-green, and 5”/12cm long. Unlike most magnolias, Magnolia Leonard Messel will succeed on chalky soil, and its flowers are less susceptible to frost damage. It’s also more compact than most, and it flowers much younger. Very little pruning required; prune in late summer to prevent ‘bleeding’.
