Not as tall as the silver birch, the West Himalayan birch has a broad crown and a graceful, open habit. Long brownish-yellow male catkins up to 12cm (5in) long appear in early spring; the greenish female flowers produce small winged seeds from small cone-like fruits in autumn. Dark green, triangular leaves have paler undersides, and shimmer in the breeze; they turn yellow, sometimes caramel coloured, in autumn. The bark can be power-washed or scrubbed to keep it pristine. Lovely planted in groups or as a multi-stemmed specimen, especially striking against a dark evergreen background in winter.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any reasonably well-drained soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Spring, summer, autumn, winter
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 30ft (9m) Spread: 20ft (6m)

["Garden trees
"option1":"1.5L Pot (Young Tree 2-3ft)","option2":null,"option3":null
Betula utilis Jaquemontii - Striking, green, oval leaves up to 8”/25cm long leaves are normally produced, but if the tree is cut back to the ground each year, the leaves become enormous. In summer, sprays of lavender-coloured, foxglove-like flowers cover the tree, but, as it flowers on wood produced the previous year, you will not get flowers if the plant is cut back to improve leaf-size. The branches are dark, wiry, and slightly twisted, giving an architectural quality to the bush. Spear-shaped, serrated leaves emerge pale bronze-green, turning mid-green in summer and yellow and orange in autumn. In March, before the leaves appear, masses of fat red buds open to flowers of palest shell-pink which develop a deeper pink eye, beautiful underplanted with small blue bulbs, Brunnera or Pulmonaria. This lovely, reliable shrub is easy to grow, and can be pruned after flowering to keep it to 3’/1m (it’s often used for bonsai in Japan) making it suitable for even the smallest garden. With masses of leaves, it’s a favourite of the giant panda should you have one grazing your garden! Non-invasive and clumping, it does have a fast growth rate so think about where you’re going to plant because it will reach its maximum height quite quickly, although it is one of the smaller varieties. The leaves emerge bronze, turning green in summer and orange and red in autumn. Masses of slightly almond-scented, semi-double, pale pink flowers in late spring; needs full sun to flower well. Also known as the Milky Way (Amanogawa) cherry, it was introduced to Europe in 1916, by Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson. The growth habit is bushy and rounded. The flowers are fully double and a light, clear red, appearing in May. The deep green, glossy leaves are lobed like those of common whitethorn, appearing early and turning yellow and bronze in autumn as the crimson berries or haws appear.
