Using weed membrane keeps back weeds and insulates the roots and will greatly increase growth rates, as well as cutting down on your weeding work. The iconic wreaths used as a status symbol in ancient Greece were made of laurel. An evergreen, large shrub or small tree, Laurus nobilis is an aromatic plant with dark green leaves used around the world in cooking. The Bay Laurel has tight clusters of small, yellow-green flowers in Spring. It maintains a good, pyramidal shape. It can be grown as a topiary specimen in a medium to large garden, or kept in large patio containers in the kitchen garden. The brown, fibrous ‘stem’ slowly grows taller, crowned by a rosette of beautiful, glossy, deep green fronds up to three metres long – a wonderfully architectural plant. Winter protection essential in all but the mildest areas – wrap the top of the ‘stem’ in fleece and protect the growing point in the crown with straw or similar insulation, and if pot-grown, bring inside or insulate the pot. Acer ginnala (syn. Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala) is a summer-flowering tree with creamy yellow fragrant panicles of small flowers, followed by persistent red-winged fruits until winter. It’s a medium-sized, slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, rounded shape, the best magnolia for smaller gardens. In early spring, lightly scented, white flowers, 4”\/10cm across with up to 18 narrow tepals, emerge like stars on the bare branches, lasting for several weeks. The flowers are more resistant to frost damage than those of tulip-flowered magnolias. Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves, sometimes with a bronze tint, appear later. Minimal pruning required; prune in late summer to prevent ‘bleeding’. The branches are dark, wiry, and slightly twisted, giving an architectural quality to the bush. Spear-shaped, serrated leaves emerge pale bronze-green, turning mid-green in summer and yellow and orange in autumn. In March, before the leaves appear, masses of fat red buds open to flowers of palest shell-pink which develop a deeper pink eye, beautiful underplanted with small blue bulbs, Brunnera or Pulmonaria. This lovely, reliable shrub is easy to grow, and can be pruned after flowering to keep it to 3’\/1m (it’s often used for bonsai in Japan) making it suitable for even the smallest garden.
