Creamy-white urn-shaped flowers, lightly scented and about 4-6mm in diameter, are produced in late autumn, followed a year later by berries about ½”/1.5cm across; these have a rough surface and are red when ripe, edible and sweet, but unexciting. Glossy, dark green leaves with serrated edges. Bark an attractive cinnamon brown, peeling in older specimens. Useful nectar source for bees, and good for permaculture plantings. For milder areas, although older specimens are hardier.

Site: Tolerates exposure, including coastal exposure
Soil: Well-drained acid to neutral soils, including poor soils
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Spring, summer, autumn, winter
Hardiness: Hardy from -10 to -15°C
Height: 16-33ft (5-10m) Spread: 16-30ft (5-10m)
"}

The brown, fibrous ‘stem’ slowly grows taller, crowned by a rosette of beautiful, glossy, deep green fronds up to three metres long – a wonderfully architectural plant. Winter protection essential in all but the mildest areas – wrap the top of the ‘stem’ in fleece and protect the growing point in the crown with straw or similar insulation, and if pot-grown, bring inside or insulate the pot. Flavour is better if tree is wall-trained. The tree is vigorous, extremely reliable, and a heavy cropper – fruit should be thinned to prevent branches breaking and for best flavour. Good disease resistance. The fruit is yellow-green, flushed and striped with orange-red; the flesh is savoury, melting, and very juicy, acid at first, but sweetening as it ripens, becoming good to eat fresh. Keeps its shape when cooked, and is an excellent juicer. The tree is moderately vigorous, and a spur-bearer. Frost-resistant flowers, and a very good pollinator. It’s a medium-sized, slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, rounded shape, the best magnolia for smaller gardens. In early spring, lightly scented, white flowers, 4”/10cm across with up to 18 narrow tepals, emerge like stars on the bare branches, lasting for several weeks. The flowers are more resistant to frost damage than those of tulip-flowered magnolias. Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves, sometimes with a bronze tint, appear later. Minimal pruning required; prune in late summer to prevent ‘bleeding’.
