The fruit is small to medium sized, round, slightly flattened, and shiny red, with juicy, pale cream-coloured flesh, sweet-sharp with a hint of strawberry. Apple Discovery makes a compact, trouble-free tree, suitable for the smaller garden. Spur-bearer, and very hardy. Excellent disease-resistance, particularly to scab, so a good choice for areas where this is a problem. Like all early apples, the fruit does not keep, but any excess can be juiced.

Site: Some shelter
Soil: Any reasonably well drained
Position: Crops best in full sun
Pick: August to mid-September
Keep: Does not keep for more than a week
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Pollination Group 3 (pollinates with Groups 2, 3 and 4)
Uses: Eating apple; juicing

Learn more about fruit tree rootstocks

During the bareroot season, our apples are pre pruned before being dispatched by mail order.

["Apple Trees","Pollination Group 3
"option1":"Bareroot","option2":"M27","option3":"1yr
Apple Discovery - The fruit is small to medium-sized, with golden skin streaked and blushed with orange-red and with a little russeting. The flesh is crisp, with a good sweet/acid balance and is Cox-like in flavour, particularly in warm summers. Compact spur-bearing tree, disease-resistant, and particularly easy to maintain. Reliable, heavy cropper; thin for larger fruit, but there is no tendency to biennial bearing. Notably resistant to scab. Apple ‘Beauty of Bath’ produces slightly flattened, medium-sized, pale greenish-yellow fruit striped with red, juicy and with a good sharp flavour, the last to ripen being sweeter. The flesh is cream-coloured, often with a pink stain, with a good balance of sweet and acid. Spur-bearer. Blossom fairly resistant to frost damage. Has a tendency to drop its fruit as it ripens; spread straw under the tree to prevent bruising. Like all early apples, it does not keep, so eat fresh and juice any excess for a pretty, pinkish juice. Almond Robijn is self-fertile and fast-growing. Some resistance to peach leaf-curl. Needs fertile soil, shelter and full sun. Prune as little as possible, and only in midsummer. It’s a medium-sized, slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, rounded shape, the best magnolia for smaller gardens. In early spring, lightly scented, white flowers, 4”/10cm across with up to 18 narrow tepals, emerge like stars on the bare branches, lasting for several weeks. The flowers are more resistant to frost damage than those of tulip-flowered magnolias. Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves, sometimes with a bronze tint, appear later. Minimal pruning required; prune in late summer to prevent ‘bleeding’. Less thorny than the species.

Popular in classical and Elizabethan times, medlars are once again coming back into favour. Medlar Nottingham is a particularly good cultivar, not just for its fruit, which is particularly well-flavoured, if rather small, but for the habit of the tree, more upright than the other species. Highly ornamental tree with twisting branches and large, deep green leaves, colouring well in autumn; best grown as a standard or half -standard. Very attractive flowers like dog-roses appear in late May/June, and are followed by fruits like large, brown rosehips.
