Good, slightly sharp flavour and very firm skin – good for packed lunches and liked by children. The tree is shapely, even with limited pruning, and fairly vigorous. Very reliable, heavy cropper. Spur-bearer; produces spurs readily, even without pruning. The blossom is particularly attractive and long-lasting, making it an excellent pollinator, and is tolerant of late frosts, so good for colder areas. Keeps only for a week or so; use any you can’t eat for juicing or cooking. Resistant to most diseases, particularly canker, and produces well even in poor weather. Does best on rich soil. A very easy and reliable apple, ideal for inexperienced growers, and a most attractive specimen tree for gardens.

Site: Average exposure
Soil: Any reasonably well-drained soil; rich clay preferred
Position: Full sun
Pick: Early September
Keep: only for a couple of weeks
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Group 3 (pollinates with Groups 2, 3 and 4)
Uses: Eating apple; also for juice and cooking

Learn more about fruit tree rootstocks

During the bareroot season, our apples are pre pruned before being dispatched by mail order.

["Apple Trees
"option1":"Bareroot","option2":"M27","option3":"1yr
Apple Katy - The blossom is particularly attractive and long-lasting, making it an excellent pollinator, and is tolerant of late frosts, so good for colder areas.

"}

The brown, fibrous ‘stem’ slowly grows taller, crowned by a rosette of beautiful, glossy, deep green fronds up to three metres long – a wonderfully architectural plant. Winter protection essential in all but the mildest areas – wrap the top of the ‘stem’ in fleece and protect the growing point in the crown with straw or similar insulation, and if pot-grown, bring inside or insulate the pot. Large, conical fruit, golden-yellow with brown speckles, sometimes flushed red; the flesh is sweet, luscious and juicy with an excellent, slightly musky flavour, and it also holds its shape well when cooked. Very hardy, moderately vigorous tree, but does not thrive in wet areas. Spur-bearer; reliable, heavy cropper. Susceptible to scab. Partially self-fertile, and a good pollinator, but yields will be better with a different pollination partner. Will not pollinate Louise Bonne de Jersey, and vice versa. It was named for the size of the nuts, although these are a bit smaller than those of some modern varieties. Very vigorous and exceptionally reliable, bearing heavy crops of large, rather pointed, glossy brown nuts with an excellent flavour, whether eaten fresh or from store. Highly nutritious source of high-quality protein, ‘good fats’, fibre, Vitamin B, folate, iron and other minerals. Harvest as they start falling from the tree. Eat fresh, or dry the crop carefully, then remove the husks and store in a mouse-proof place. Filbert ‘Hall’s Giant’ was the best performer in trials by the Agroforestry Research Trust in Devon. A good choice where weather conditions are poor, and an excellent pollinator of other later-flowering hazels. Flavour is better if tree is wall-trained. The tree is vigorous, extremely reliable, and a heavy cropper – fruit should be thinned to prevent branches breaking and for best flavour.
