Coastal Trees

Coastal Trees

These salt and wind resistant trees are your best choice for a seaside planting. A windbreak of tough trees will provide much desired shelter, while some, like the flowering Hawthorns, can be planted as decorative specimens.

Learn more about how to plant a tree in our advice section and find even more information in our resources.

Bareroot coastal trees | mid-November to March

Bareroot trees are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted coastal trees | all year round

Potted trees are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

Hawthorn, Whitethorn, or ‘Sceach gheal’ in Irish, it goes under many names and is one of our most important native hedgerow species. It makes a fantastic neat deciduous hedge as it clips well but can also be left to grow. Crataegus monogyna is easily recognisable in the month of May when its thorny branches are smothered in white flowers; the Autumn brings an abundance of its famous red haws which can be used to make jam or delicious Hawthorn jelly. A very important species that supports lots of wildlife. Hawthorn can often be found near holy wells and it is famous in Irish lore as the Fairy Tree - it is considered unlucky to cut an old one down. It will grow in most soils and will take wind and coastal exposure.

Site: Will tolerate inland and coastal exposure
Soil: Any reasonable soil other than very wet
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Blossom in Spring, berries in Autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 13-26ft (4-8m) Spread: 13-26ft (4-8m)

["Bareroot","coastal hedging","Coastal trees","native","Native trees","thorny hedging
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":"N/A","option3":"Certified Irish seed
Crataegus monogyna - The oval leaves emerge silver in spring, becoming a distinctive grey-green as the juvenile downiness wears away, and turning yellow to russet in autumn. Flat clusters of foamy, creamy-white flowers are borne in May, a good nectar source for pollinators.

Sycamore

Everybody knows Sycamore. Like it or loath it, the first specimens were introduced approximately 900 years ago, and since then it has taken over woodlands, hedgerows, railway lines, cliff sides, and everything from the smallest urban garden to the largest of arboretums. It's feared for its persistence in seeding practically everywhere- however, its usefulness is rarely spoken about. During its lifetime of approx. 200 years, it provides for hundreds of different species, including humans. Its sweet sap can be extracted from the bark to be used as an alternative to maple syrup; in Spring it blooms with thousands of nectar-filled flowers which bees absolutely adore. In Summer, you can find hundreds of birds nesting and raising their young in it, as well as many species of lichen and moss, and a variety of insects, on the bark.
In Autumn, Sycamore will leave as much as 2 ft of leaf litter on the ground and you will find squirrels, mice, hedgehogs, and many other species feeding on the seeds which will have fallen over the previous few weeks, and even nesting among the leaves at the base of the tree. In old age, the tree provides host to many many different fungi, insects and even a few mammals nesting in its hollow stem. Sycamore is also an amazingly diverse, low-odour and food-safe timber, which can be used for many items such as bowls, utensils, doors, windows, flooring, and a whole range of other timber products.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Well drained, some damp, prefers acid but tolerates lime
Position: Full sun, some shade
Season of Interest: Autumn colour, wildlife
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 80+ft (25m) Spread: 50ft (16m)

["Bareroot","Coastal trees","Common broadleaf trees","Trees for firewood
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":null,"option3":null
["Bareroot | 1-2ft
"option1":"Bareroot | 2-3ft","option2":null,"option3":null
["Bareroot | 2-3ft
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Acer_pseudoplatanus_2.jpg?v=1633344650","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Acer_pseudoplatanus.jpg?v=1633344648","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Acer_pseudoplatanus_3.jpg?v=1633344647
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Acer_pseudoplatanus_2.jpg?v=1633344650
Type | Size

Sycamore

Everybody knows Sycamore.
